The 2011 Census for Hotels
This March everyone in the UK will be asked to complete a census questionnaire, run in England and Wales by the Office for National Statistics.
Census day in 2011 is 27th March and this has implications for hotel managers and proprietors, who will need to make sure that your usual residents* have a questionnaire. While households will all receive questionnaires through the post, hotels and other communal establishments (such as University halls of residence and hospitals) should have residents’
questionnaires hand delivered.
Someone from the 2011 Census team should bring enough individual census questionnaires to you, which you then
have to distribute to and collect from, every person usually living in your hotel on 27th March. This would include members of staff, long term residents, and maybe you and your family.
Not every hotel guest will have to complete a questionnaire at your hotel. If they are not usually resident with you,
they will be included on their own household questionnaire.
The questionnaires can be completed online, or on paper (and then handed back to you).
You will also have to complete a short questionnaire about the hotel and then someone from the 2011 Census
team will come to collect all the questionnaires from you on a pre-arranged date.
You do not need to do anything now, but if you want to find out more about the census, visit the website at:

*A usual resident means:
• any family, staff or guests who are UK residents who live at the hotel and have been, or intend to be,
resident for a period of six months including census night (27th March 2011)
• any family, staff or guests who are UK residents and who do not have another usual address
• any non-UK residents who have been, or intend to be, resident in the UK for at least three months and
are living at the hotel on census night
